Physical Education at Lawford

At Lawford, Physical Education aims to create a culture that inspires an active generation to develop a lifelong love for physical activity, encourage each other and achieve. We intend to provide children with a variety of sporting opportunities both inside and outside of school, where physical skill, alongside knowledge, personal growth and emotional wellbeing are held as a top priority. Our PE curriculum encompasses our vision, where they are encouraged to strive to be ambitious for themselves and for others, have integrity and nurture all.

Ensuring progression

Here at Lawford we use the PE Passport to deliver and evidence our PE curriculum. This scheme of work ensures every child is able to achieve during PE sessions, even if they do not enjoy being physically active.

Each lesson includes 'know, show, grow' learning objectives. Whilst it is important children learn to perform physical skills they can utilise in a variety of sports, the 'know' and 'grow' objectives ensure they are still achieving even if they find it difficult to demonstrate a skill physically. For example, if they are able to explain their knowledge of how an underarm throw should be performed (know), and if they are able to support their peers and work as a team (grow), then they are still achieving in PE. This enables the children to perceive themselves as competent, making it more likely they will develop a love for some form of physical activity; which is our ultimate aim. Evidence of the children's achievement is all on the passport in the form of videos and pictures, and we are currently in the process of including pupil voice at the end of all units to give the children more ownership over their learning.

All the know, show and grow objectives can be found below.

Beyond the curriculum

Building on this further, to ensure the children of Lawford are receiving their 2 and a half hours of activity per week, they take part in an ‘active 10 minutes’ on the days in which they do not have a PE session. We also offer range of before and after school clubs, including acro, football, tennis, tri-golf, netball, rounders, gymnastics and squash. Throughout the year, every year group (except EYFS) have many opportunities to compete against other schools and attend festivals to ensure they are introduced to a form of competitive sport at an early age. Furthermore, each child throughout the school year is given the opportunity to take part in an intra-school competition, allowing them to demonstrate our school vision and show ambition, integrity and nurture their teammates.

Lawford also selects a 'sports crew' each year. They have to apply for the role and are selected based on their commitment to school sport and their dedication to helping the younger children enjoy being physically active. These children are a mixture of year five and six, and once selected take part in training with the school’s PE lead. In this training, they are taught how to set up activities for younger children, suggest ideas for physical activity in school and support the staff with KS1 sports day. This again encompasses our school vision, where children strive to be ambitious for themselves and for others, and nurture all.
